Gloom and Doom with Steve Rowell 2006 Contemporary Art Center, Cincinnati: Kaplan Hall Lobby Gallery Intervention Drop ceiling system, electronic components. surface area: roughly 50’ x 100’ |

For one of the two linked installations, SIMPARCH was asked to provide a work in the spectacular lobby of Zaha Hadid's art center. They intervened with a vast drop ceiling that incorporated the geometric silhouette of a B-2 stealth bomber. The tiles hung in a sloping formation dramatically compressing the space. This gesture spatially and acoustically altered the CAC lobby through the sound-deadening ceiling tiles juxtaposed with Rowell's ambient sound track (Tactile Air I) of the far off invasion of Iraq emanating from the ceiling. The B-2 "Spirit" bomber, premier symbol of the nations military power, can fly into combat zones undetected and drop 40,000 lbs of ordnance per mission. It was the most advanced long-range, "low observable" aircraft in service at the time of the exhibition. | ||||||
