DRUM 2007 Plywood 18' x 32' x 40' Greenland Street, A Foundation, Liverpool, England |
||||||||
This hulking cylinder is a functional homage to vertical skateboarding and civil mega-projects. It is engineered to rotate on its armature to aid erection. The drum n basin exhibit included SIMPARCH's free basin project. Skaters originally repurposed concrete pipes in the early '70s, finding them on the outskirts of American desert towns. By doing consecutive runs up one side then the other ("forevers"), a skater challenges verticality by going as high as possible beyond the 3 and 9 o'clock register. Designed in collaboration with University of Chicago physicist, Peter Eng, Drum was fabricated out of standard plywood plates -- cut on a CNC mill, flat-packed and assembled as a kit. | ||||||||
