Spec 2001 10’ x 72’ x 18’ acoustic tile, lights, bench, sound system, original composition |
||||
Spec was commissioned to accompany the work of experimental sound artist Kevin Drumm. The challenge was to build an acoustically friendly listening environment within the cathedral-like spaces of the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago. The resulting piece produces a tension between interior and exterior spaces that has become a trademark of SIMPARCH's work. The outside of the piece, visible in the round, openly displays the instruments of its creation; clips, conduits and wires protrude from foil backed ceiling tiles arranged in a tunnel-like half-cylinder that stretches the length of the gallery. The interior space is a long, clean, container of sound, filled with the repetitive geometry of the rectangular sound panels used in its creation. | ||||
