An Acoustic Collaboration with Kevin Drumm
The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago, Chicago, IL

Spec was commissioned to accompany the work of experimental sound artist Kevin Drumm. The challenge was to build an acoustically friendly listening environment within the cathedral-like spaces of the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago. The resulting piece produces a tension between interior and exterior spaces that has become a trademark of SIMPARCH's work. The outside of the piece, visible in the round, openly displays the instruments of its creation; clips, conduits and wires protrude from foil backed ceiling tiles arranged in a tunnel-like half-cylinder that stretches the length of the gallery. The interior space is a long, clean, container of sound, filled with the repetitive geometry of the rectangular sound panels used in its creation.
